(Bloomberg) -- Avg. price for regular gasoline at U.S. pumps +4.27c to $2.2119/gal, according to Lundberg Survey Inc.

* Survey by Camarillo, Calif.-based co. conducted Sept. 9, based on information at 2,500 filling stations

* Highest avg. U.S. retail price: $2.72/gal in Bay Area of Calif.

* Lowest avg. U.S. retail price: $1.91/gal in Jackson, Miss.

* Long Island, N.Y.: $2.27/gal

* Current price is 23c below this time last yr

* “If crude oil prices do not move in a severe trajectory, either up or down, we may still see some modest increase in the national retail average because retailers have been squeezed,” Trilby Lundberg, president of Lundberg Survey, says in phone interview. “Retailers are under pressure to recover more of their margin.”
